FOUNDATION FOR SUPPORT OF EDUCATION AND SCIENCE (Alferov's Foundation)
The Foundation was established on February 23, 2001 by Nobel Prize laureate Zh.I.Alferov in order to unite intellectual, financial and organizational efforts of both Russian and foreign legal entities and individuals in unanimous zeal for development of Russian science and education. Main objectives of the Foundation:
Supporting the unique national system of secondary and higher education (especially in science and physics);
Supporting young Russian scientists research;
Granting scholarships to gifted pupils, students and graduate students and grants to young scientists;
Providing financial aid to teachers of higher education institutions and secondary schools, widows of full members and corresponding members of the RAS;
Providing charitable assistance to the higher education institutions and secondary schools.
The Foundation awards grants and scholarships to the most talented pupils, students and young scientists, a D.N. Tretyakov grant awarded for outstanding achievements in the learning process and research and development in semiconductor materials technology being one of them. The Foundation's goal is support and development of Russian science, higher and secondary education systems. Alferov's Foundation scholarship grantees are from various institutions - Saint Petersburg Academic University - Nanotechnology Research and Education Centre RAS, St. Petersburg State Polytechnical University, St. Petersburg State Electrotechnical University, St. Petersburg State University of Economics and Finance, Surgut State University , Nizhnevartovsk State Pedagogical University, Ugra State University among them. Since 2003 the Foundation has awarded the prize and a gold medal to young scientists no older than 33 years from St. Petersburg and the Leningrad region for the best research work. Since 2007 the competition has become nationwide. The Foundation actively participates in research and development projects and programs on development and application high technologies that correspond to the priority directions of science and technology.
